Analysis of the Value Chain of Berries and Nuts in Ukraine

The Foundation for Support of Reforms in Ukraine provided expert support and advice related to the «Analysis of the value chain of berries and nuts in Ukraine» as part of the project «Global Quality and Standards Program in Ukraine: Strengthening Quality and Compliance Capacity for Selected Value Chains» by the UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION (UNIDO).

The proposed study aimed at a comprehensive analysis of the value chain of berries and nuts in Ukraine. By studying the entire life cycle from production to consumption, we identified critical points, challenges and opportunities within the value chain. Our approach to a comprehensive analysis of the berry and nut value chain in Ukraine focused on quality, environmental, social and sustainability requirements, as well as a multifaceted and thorough assessment of compliance infrastructure.

We used a proven methodology that combined qualitative and quantitative research methods. This included a combination of primary data collection through interviews and on-site observations, complemented by secondary data analysis from relevant industry reports, national statistics and government publications. A key element of our approach wass to actively interact with all stakeholders along the value chain, including farmers, producers, processors, distributors, retailers, and regulators. We also actively engaged government agencies, industry associations, academic institutions, and public organisations. This approach will ensure a deep understanding of the industry dynamics and challenges.

Our analysis explored in depth the quality standards and practices that dominate the berry and nut value chain in Ukraine. This covered factors such as production techniques, post-harvest handling, storage equipment, packaging and transportation methods to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. We assessed the alignment of Ukrainian quality standards and regulations with the EU standards, particularly focusing on requirements related to food safety, pesticide residues and packaging. By identifying areas of convergence and divergence, we were able to develop strategies to harmonise Ukrainian standards with European norms, thus facilitating market access for berry and nut exports.

Our analysis assessed the existing regulatory framework and compliance infrastructure that governs the berry and nut industry in Ukraine. This included a review of relevant laws, regulations, standards, certificates and enforcement mechanisms to determine the level of compliance with quality, environmental and social requirements. We found opportunities to strengthen the infrastructure supporting the production and export of berries and nuts in Ukraine.
