GESI

The Foundation for Support of Reforms in Ukraine continues to implement innovative approaches in its activities, this time focusing on the integration of GESI (gender equality and social inclusion) into all stages of projects. We are convinced that true development is only possible when no group of people is left behind.

The GESI component involves a systematic approach to analysing and incorporating social and gender aspects into any activity. For example, when planning events, we use disaggregated data (by gender, age, social status) to identify possible barriers to participation of different groups. The implementation of this analysis allows us to avoid practices that may worsen the situation of vulnerable groups and find ways to provide additional support.

‘The introduction of the gender equality and social inclusion component contributes to the sustainable outcome of all initiatives and transformations, and also demonstrates the maturity of the organisation, a value-based and human-centred approach to programme and project management,’ explains Marichka Punko, gender adviser of the NGU ‘Foundation for Support of Reforms in Ukraine’.

Our experience has already shown that simple but targeted changes can significantly increase the effectiveness of initiatives.

We pay special attention to adapting the GESI to the specifics of each project. We develop guidelines, rules, and procedures that not only take into account the needs of all social groups, but also enhance the overall impact of projects. To do this, it is important to balance the requirements for GESI implementation with the resources and goals of the projects to avoid overloading the teams.

The Foundation strives not only to achieve high standards in its work, but also to promote cultural and social change. We believe that integrating GESI is a tool that will help to build a more inclusive and equitable society.
